Networking for Introverts

Networking can be a daunting part of any job search, especially for introverts. It can also be one of the most crucial aspects. Building meaningful, intentional professional connections can be a game changer when it comes to finding a job you love.

According to an article written by the Harvard Business Review, after surveying 450 professionals from various occupations to determine the make-or-break factors for developing networking skills, they found that regardless of age, gender, career stage, or level of extroversion or introversion, networking skills can be developed to accelerate your career. It’s never too late to start networking.

The key is to approach networking in a way that aligns with your personality, allowing you to build meaningful connections without pretending to be someone you’re not. Below are some strategies to help introverts network effectively and authentically.

Start Online

There are so many amazing online networking tools – LinkedIn and Indeed just to name a couple. We’ve even written a blog outlining how you can leverage social media to help you land a job. Using online networking platforms allows you to take time to craft your messages and engage at your own pace without the pressure of face-to-face interactions.

Prepare

Practicing your elevator pitch (quick personal introduction) can help you feel more confident when going into networking conversations. If you know who you are meeting with, research that person and prepare a few questions or talking points related to their work. The more prepared you are, the more you’ll be able to relax.

Focus on Quality Not Quantity

Networking is not about making as many connections as you can. It’s about building and nourishing genuine, long-term professional relationships that will benefit you throughout your entire career. Introverts often thrive in one-on-one settings, so, instead of attending large networking events, try having a few quality professional relationships. Reach out to professionals in your field and request a coffee meeting or phone call and continue to cultivate those relationships. Find what is comfortable and works for you and stick with it.

Follow Up

Following up after a networking event or conversation via email or letter is a great way to maintain and deepen the relationships you make. The more comfortable you become with someone, likely the less introverted you will feel with them – so find those connections that are right for you and strengthen them over time.

Set Realistic Networking Goals for Yourself

Networking doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start by setting small, achievable goals, like connecting with one new person a month. This allows you to grow your network gradually without feeling overwhelmed.

By taking an authentic and personalized approach to networking, introverts can form lasting connections that enhance their careers without stepping too far outside their comfort zones. So, get out there and use these tips to start building your professional network.

Happy Networking.
