Juneteenth 2025: An Important Step Towards Equality

Why We Celebrate Juneteenth
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history—the end of slavery and a step toward justice and equality.
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved people in Confederate states were legally free. However, the Civil War was still ongoing, and the proclamation could not be enforced in many Southern states where slavery continued for more than two years.
It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, that the last remaining enslaved individuals were informed of their freedom. This day became known as Juneteenth—a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the ongoing pursuit of equity for all.
The End of Slavery in the United States
Over 150 years ago, on June 19, 1865, news of freedom finally reached the enslaved people of Texas. This moment marked the true end of slavery in the United States, following more than 200 years of injustice.
We honor this day because it represents a turning point—a day when the promise of freedom began to reach all corners of the nation. It serves as a symbol of progress and a call to continue building a society rooted in equality and fairness. While there is still work to be done, Juneteenth reminds us of the first—and perhaps most important—step toward making America a safe and just place for people of all backgrounds.
